What are causes of stomach cancer?

Old age, Smoking, tobacco, alcohol, smoked fish, H.pylori infection, reflux esophagitis, obesity, Reduced immunity like HIV are some of risk factors.
People working in rubber, chemical industry, people with blood group A are high risk for developing stomach cancer.


What are symptoms of stomach cancer?

Anemia, weight loss, decreased appetite, lump in abdomen, black stools, blood in vomit are symptoms of stomach cancer.
Distal stomach cancer cause obstructive symptoms leading to abdominal fullness, vomiting, pain abdomen.

What tests are done to identify stomach cancer?
  • Upper GI scopy and biopsy
  • CT scan abdomen pelvis are important in diagnosis
  • Pet scan done to assess spread
  • Diagnostic laparoscopy is must prior to any treatment to rule out microspread
What treatment is planned for stomach cancer?

Except very early (stage 1) cancer most require 2/3 cycles chemotherapy prior to surgery.
Surgery is removal of cancer with good margin with lymph nodes (D2 lymphadenectomy). both ends should be free from cancer. Then intestine joined to proximal part for maintaining bowel continuity can be done by open/ laparoscopy. Stomach Cancer
In advanced stage bypass surgery done first for feeding then chemotherapy started.
