Pilonidal sinus

Pilonidal sinus is hole in intergluteal cleft filled with fluid or pus thereby forming cyst or abscess.it usually contains hair,dirt and debris.

Whenever it becomes infected it oozes out pus and fluid, After the abscesss goes away by itself or antibiotics a sinus is formed If left untreated then sinuses with harbor chronic infection and form recurrent abscess.

Investigations

  • Clinical evaluation is all that is needed
  • Ultrasound can confirm

Treatment

  • In presence of active infection antibiotics and anti inflammatory are give
  • Abscesses may be drained
  • To prevent recurrences wide excision of all the sinus tracts is done
  • Healing is by seconday intention or primary closure by rotation flap
